Literacy Courses
These programmes are designed to be completed in one academic year, however they offer flexibility to allow the learner to work through the content at their own pace.
The course will span 6 workbooks in total, designed to be completed one per each half term alongside an adult learner. Technology Triumphs does not currently provide assessment of these courses.
Each workbook is designed to cover 18 sessions (if following a school half term, 3 sessions per week).
Please note that these workbooks do not cover ALL concepts from the National Curriculum but do draw down from the N.C
Topics covered in this course:
- Fiction 3 Little PigsÂ
- Looking at traditional tales we will explore roles and structures of familiar stories and retell the story of the three little pigs in our own unique way.
- Instructions RecipesÂ
- Looking at basic instructions using bossy (imperative verbs) and sequencing devices this unit will focus on creating written recipes with simple step by step instructions.
- Non Fiction-Information textsÂ
- Report on animals - In this unit we will explore the style of information texts, with headings, subheadings and an introduction to paragraphs, to create a basic information text on our favourite animals.
- Letters
- In an introduction to the conventions of writing informal letters we will explore various complexities of response letters, from thank you notes to holiday postcards and beyond.
- Persuasive Texts
-  In this module, we will begin our journey in persuasive text creation by looking at holiday destinations and the vocabulary and style of a holiday brochure to introduce expanded noun phrases and persuasive vocabulary. FictionÂ
- Using a picture prompt this module looks at creative writing as you are guided through the steps of storytelling to create your own original fiction short story or chapter segment.
Topics covered in this course:
- Fiction
- Traditional Macbeth - Using the events of Shakespeare's play we explore writing action scenes and developing descriptions of characters and settings. Included will be some poetry work based on the visuals of the blasted heath
- Instructions Games
- Taking inspiration from favourite games and pastimes we will look at writing step by step instructions for game rules, building our understanding of adverbials of time and imperative verbs.
- Non Fiction
- Recounts World War one - Looking at real-world history we will write recounts of key events using expanded noun phrases, concentrating on adding detail to our descriptions and using multiple sources for factual information.
- Letters Asking for Help
- Using fictional and real-world charities we will be looking at using skills from the persuasive text's model to write formal letters asking for assistance and contributions focussing on formal language, paragraph building and advanced letter conventions.
- Persuasive Texts Advertisements
- In this module, we will design our own product and use persuasive writing techniques to create print, audio and video advertisements.
- Fiction Picture Prompt
- In this module you will be taken through the creative processes in writing your own piece of original fiction from a picture prompt, from character and setting creation, through plot development to the finished piece.
Topics covered in this course:
- Fiction
- Hound of the Baskervilles - This module will look at deeper character analysis and motivations as well as more sophisticated world-building to create compound and complex sentences that demonstrate more maturity and control of the writing process.
- InstructionsÂ
- This module will focus on the creation of a travel guide that incorporates all the advanced structures of instruction texts including lists, headings and subheadings, captions and detailed paragraph content to create a leaflet for exploring our favourite travel destinations.
- Non Fiction
- Newspapers and reportage. With black history as our theme this module will focus on the style of newspaper writing, looking particularly and facts and bias, to create a journalistic recount of famous people from history.
- LettersÂ
- This module will look at formal letter writing with real-life applications as we explore the range and style of letters needed to market our own product to business in a 'dragon's den' style scenario.
- Persuasive Texts
- This module will focus on exploring opposing points of view and creating a balanced argument, with both a pro and con version of a hot button topic, culminating in creating a recorded speech to convince an audience of your stance.
- Fiction
- Â In the culmination of our learning journey in the wide variety of literacy skills we will take a picture prompt and, with guidance, utilise all the skills built on the course so far to create an original short story.
